“Sixteen coats of lacquer, and four months of waiting between them.”

One trip, ten days, Hoi An and the villages along the Thu Bồn. Lacquer is built up in layers over bamboo, each one sanded back and left to cure in a damp room — the humidity does the work of a kiln. A bowl takes about four months. We ordered in March and collected in July.
